MIA is delighted to welcome our former curator Dr. Marika Sardar, Prof. John Seyller, and Prof. Audrey Truschke for a webinar about the publication of our new book – the Ramayana of Hamida Banu Begum.  

This lavishly illustrated manuscript was commissioned by a remarkable woman, the Mughal Queen Hamida Banu Begum (c. 1527-1604) and tells the age-old story of Rama, an extremely popular and widely circulating Indian epic that was translated from Sanskrit into Persian under the Mughal rulers. The publication is a fitting conclusion to the Qatar-India Year of Culture 2019 and also a celebration of Sheikh Saoud Al Thani who acquired the manuscript for MIA and reunited the various illuminations of this manuscript that had been dispersed over time. The manuscript is a milestone of Indian painting and manuscript production and a crucial document in the history of Mughal-sponsored translations of Sanskrit texts.
