CONFERENCE: Mobility, Virtuality and Transculturality in Travel Literature

University of Tlemcen, Algeria
1st February, 2024

According to St Augustine, who was born in Algeria, “the world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page”. Nowadays, the world has become a single sphere thanks to digital platforms and technologies allowing to discover it at a lower cost. This digital revolution also affects literature for new artistic trends appear regularly on the web, combining interactive novels and hypertextual narratives that associate images and emotions in a multi-hypermedia space. Travel writing is also affected due to its largely heterogeneous forms and contents; its “hybridity of modes and styles” (Korte 2000) and its interaction with other kinds of expression (Pratt 1992).

Our international conference focuses on this literary genre in which the authors give an account of their journeys and what they experienced during this mobility. Not confined to mere encyclopedic descriptions, such an account also focuses on impressions and emotions. It confronts the reader with the difference of the other and the elsewhere. Travel literature tends to favour reality over fiction but it does not preclude the imaginary universe of travel that is part of the era of globalization. The aim of this conference is therefore to explore, through diversified and multidimensional approaches, the plural facets of mobility, including new research itineraries of virtuality, and their interaction with realities, cultures and modes of writing.

This online conference featuring live or recorded remote presentations will include of papers that consider (but are not limited to) the following tracks:

- Travel fact and travel fiction

- Mystical journeys and initiation quests

- Forms of travel: migration, border crossing, imperialism, decolonization...

- Travel writing and other media (digital, social, film, photography...)

- Travel discourse between globalization and transculturality

At the end of the conference, a selection of papers based on the presentations will be published in the journal of LLC research lab Revue Plurilingue: Etudes des Langues, Littératures et Cultures/ELLiC https://journals.univ-tlemcen.dz/ELLIC/index.php/ELLIC
