2 Editorial Positions at postmedieval: Content Editors and Managing Editor

25 September 2020

Editorial Search: Content Editors:

After celebrating our first ten years as a quarterly journal of cultural studies attuned to the “medieval” broadly conceived, we at postmedieval are seeking a new editorial team to carry the publication forward. We (“we” being the current Content Editors, Myra Seaman and Lara Farina, and current Book Review Editor, Julie Orlemanski) have been able to renegotiate the terms of our contract with our publisher so that the journal will receive more financial support for its production and circulation and more attention from our publishers at Palgrave. This is an auspicious moment for new editors to reimagine what postmedieval can do, who it can serve, and what forms its contributions to cultural inquiry can take.

We are searching for two new Content Editors, who, together with Julie Orlemanski, will determine the content and mission of the journal from 2021 forward. (Julie will be switching from the position of Book Review Editor to one of the three new Content Editor positions.) The editorial team will be assisted by a salaried Managing Editor, responsible for many of the day-to-day operations of the journal, who we plan to hire in consultation with the new Editors. The Content Editor positions are supported by a modest stipend.

Editorial Search: Managing Editor:

postmedieval, a scholarly journal focused on medieval and early-modern cultures and their ongoing significance, seeks a Managing Editor. This part-time position is supported by an annual salary of $17,500 USD. The Managing Editor will assist a team of three Content Editors with the production of the quarterly publication. Work will be performed remotely and will average about 15 hours per week (allowing for some fluctuation with production schedule). The position can be expected to begin in January 2021. We would prefer to hire someone planning to stay in the position for the longer term (certainly more than a year).

This position is a new one for the journal, made possible by the renegotiation of our agreement with our publisher, Palgrave (a subsidiary of Springer/Nature). We anticipate that the addition of a salaried manager will allow the new editorial team to pursue an ambitious future for postmedieval. Managing Editor responsibilities include: overseeing the journal’s submission, review, and production processes; sharing in the copy-editing and proofing of articles; developing and maintaining a postmedieval website; managing the journal’s email account; and facilitating individual subscriptions. In collaboration with the rest of the editorial team, the Managing Editor will also be in contact with our representatives at Palgrave and with the members of the journal’s Advisory Board. Depending on the interests of the person hired, and in consultation with the other editors, the position may also include opportunities for more content-specific contributions (like commissioning book-review essays, or soliciting new content for the journal’s website).
