The University intends to appoint to the Abdulaziz Saud AlBabtain Laudian Professorship of Arabic with effect from 1st October 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Laudian Chair in Arabic, established in 1636, is one of the oldest professorships of Arabic in Europe. The Professorship was generously re-endowed in 2016 by Mr Abdulaziz Saud AlBabtain. It plays a pivotal role in teaching and research in Arabic language, literature and civilisation in the University and in the on-going development of Arabic studies, in particular at graduate level.

The University seeks a scholar of the highest international calibre who will provide academic leadership in promoting and sustaining research within the Faculty and has the ability to teach and inspire students at all levels. The Professor will play a major role in the supervision, guidance and examination of graduate students in the subject group of Arabic, Persian and Turkish Studies. They should be able to contribute broadly to undergraduate and graduate teaching and examination and be willing to take on leading roles in the administration of the faculty. They should have broad academic interests and sympathies in order to contribute to what is a wide and increasingly interdisciplinary research field in Oxford. We welcome applications from specialists working on Arabic literature of any period up to and including the 18th century CE.

The successful candidate will have a substantial international reputation in scholarship and research in classical Arabic literature, an excellent publication record of book-length works and articles in international journals in this field, and an on-going research agenda covering the next 5-10 years which will result in further substantial publications of international quality. You will have the ability to communicate effectively, and a demonstrable commitment to providing effective and innovative teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including the teaching of primary sources in Arabic. You will also have the ability to contribute effectively to ensuring the long-term development of the subject, the demonstrable ability to train, guide, and motivate research students and junior colleagues, and to develop and present proposals for research funding.
