Assistant Professor of English (Shakespeare) - SUNY New Paltz
The English Department at the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz invites applications for a tenure-track position in Shakespeare at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 2026. We invite candidates with expertise in Shakespeare and Early Modern literature, preferably with a pedagogical and scholarly agenda that would contribute to a number of curricular and research initiatives in the department and university, including ecocritical or posthumanist studies, pedagogical scholarship, textual studies, global premodern studies, world literature, and other questions of embodiment more generally.
The successful candidate will be expected to design and teach advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in Shakespeare and Early Modern literature and culture. The standard teaching load for this position is 18 credits per year. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active program of scholarly research leading to publication, effective teaching and mentoring, and service within the University and disciplinary community. Required:
PhD or equivalent in Shakespeare, Early Modern literature, or related field (e.g. Theater and Performance with a focus on Shakespeare, etc.), or supply evidence of imminent completion. Candidates should demonstrate a strong plan for active publication and a record of, or potential for, excellent teaching at the undergraduate level. Electronic submissions required.
