Assistant Professor (Research and Education) at the Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham
The Shakespeare Institute wishes to appoint a permanent Assistant Professor with effect from 1st September 2022. The post holder’s main place of work will be the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-upon-Avon.
We seek an early career academic with a completed and successfully examined PhD, whether in drama, or the intersections of literature and drama, in a field of study relevant to the interests of the Shakespeare Institute. The successful candidate will contribute to a range of research, education, organisation and management, will be able to contribute to undergraduate courses on the main Birmingham campus, to teach across a range of the Institute’s existing Masters modules, and to develop new MA modules at the Institute. The ability to design and teach an MA module on Shakespeare and Film and/or provide tuition on Shakespeare and pedagogy would be extremely welcome. The ability to lead practical classes and to provide tuition on Shakespeare and pedagogy would also be welcomed. Reflecting the Shakespeare Institute’s global engagements, expertise in Global Shakespeare would complement these core areas of expertise. We expect the successful candidate not only to be an experienced in-person seminar teacher but to be fluent in online pedagogy and accustomed to using digital platforms such as Canvas. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate academic citizenship, developing and maintaining generous, mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students.
Teaching is likely to include a substantial contribution to: (a) the delivery of high-quality teaching and assessment; (b) the management, development (including programme/module review) of educational provision; and (c) enhancement of the student experience or employability.
Research is likely to involve initiating, conducting and disseminating original research. Your research will have measurable outcomes reflected in your growing national (and ideally international) reputation.
