23 December 2022

Magdalen College and the Faculty of English are recruiting an Associate Professor (or Professor) of Literature in English to start on 1 September 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

This is a joint appointment: the person appointed to the Associate Professorship will be appointed to a Tutorial Fellowship in English at Magdalen College. Additional allowances are provided by Magdalen College, including accommodation in College, which also comprises teaching space, or a housing allowance of £15,000 p.a. together with a study/teaching room in College and access to a Housing Loan Scheme. An additional allowance would be payable upon award of Full Professor title.

Applications are invited for the field of early modern literature in English; the Faculty has a preference for candidates with research and teaching interests in early American literature or the influence of encounters with the Americas (broadly conceived) on literature in English, 1550-1760. You will give lectures and classes, participate in examining, and play a full and active role in Faculty administration. For the College, you will give 8 hours of tutorial teaching each week during Full Term, share the organization of the tuition of students studying English, and contribute to their pastoral care. You will also be expected to participate in the administrative work of the College and will be a member of its Governing Body.

You should have the potential to enhance the high reputation of the Faculty of English in research, a proven record of internationally recognised scholarship and research appropriate to your career stage, and the ability to provide a high standard of research-led teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including the supervision of research students.

Please upload the following documents with your application: (1) a detailed covering letter, which explains how you meet the selection criteria for the post and sets out information about your research and the subjects you could offer to teach (2) a full curriculum vitae including a list of publications; (3) and (4) two representative samples of written work, published or unpublished, each no more than 10,000 words in length.
