Barker Scholarship: PhD in History, University of Southampton

Applications are invited for the new Barker scholarship, an exciting opportunity to complete a PhD in History at the University of Southampton beginning in October 2022. Research projects for the PhD can be from any period of history but should match the expertise of the History Department of the University of Southampton (ranging from ancient to medieval, from early modern to modern history). This scholarship, funded by the Ardeola Trust, consists of full payment of UK fees and maintenance for three years. The full amount of the scholarship is £64,000.

Criteria of eligibility

-Applicants will have a first-class BA degree in History and an MA degree in History or cognate discipline.

-This scholarship is for full-time PhD study only.

-Applicants will be short-listed on the basis of academic merit. Preference will be given to applicants whose projects closely match the research interests of the department.

-Please note that this award only covers UK fees.

Method of application

Please submit the following by 7 June 2022:

-A research proposal of maximum 1,000 words.

-A brief covering letter, setting out the reasons for your application.

-A curriculum vitae, amounting to not more than four A4 pages in total.

-The names and email addresses of two academic referees.

Those who are short-listed will be invited to attend an interview which will be held during the week commencing 4 July 2022.  The interviews will be held online via Microsoft Teams.
