The University intends to appoint to the Boden Professorship of Sanskrit with effect from 1st October 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. Oxford’s long-standing pre-eminence in the teaching of Sanskrit is well known throughout the world, and this post established in 1831 is the only established chair in Sanskrit in the UK.

The University seeks a scholar who specializes in any area or areas of Sanskrit and Indological Studies, broadly conceived, and who will provide academic leadership in promoting and sustaining research within the Faculty. The preferred candidate will be a scholar of the highest international calibre, with an outstanding record of research and publication, capable of creating and maintaining contacts with colleagues and relevant departments in Oxford and other universities in the UK and overseas. You will teach and inspire students at all levels, playing a major role in the supervision, guidance and examination of graduate students in the Subject group of South and Inner Asian Studies.  You will be expected to be able to contribute broadly to undergraduate and graduate teaching and examination, and also to faculty-wide administration. This role represents an opportunity to build on your broad intellectual and cultural interests within a wide and increasingly interdisciplinary research field in Oxford.

You will have a substantial international reputation in scholarship and research in Sanskrit and Indological Studies, with a focus on pre-1400 South Asia, an excellent publication record of book-length works and articles in international journals in this field, and an on-going research agenda covering the next 5-10 years which will result in further substantial publications of international quality. A solid linguistic knowledge of multiple registers of Sanskrit is essential, as is an interest in promoting the study and research on Vedic, post-Vedic, Epico-Purāṇic, Buddhist, and classical literature.  You should have the ability to communicate effectively, and a demonstrable ability and commitment to provide effective and innovative teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level. You will also have the ability to contribute effectively to ensuring the long-term development of the subject, and the demonstrable ability to train, guide and motivate research students and junior colleagues.
