Departmental Lecturer, Classical Arabic Literature, University of Oxford

15 April 2022

The Faculty of Oriental Studies is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and well qualified scholar to teach Classical Arabic literature. The Departmental Lecturer will support the teaching of the literatures of Arab societies in the Faculty of Oriental Studies, providing cover for some of the duties of the current AlBabtain Laudian Professor of Arabic (Julia Bray), who is retiring and being replaced by Professor Tahera Qutbuddin from summer 2023.

The Departmental Lecturer will teach undergraduates reading for the degrees of BA in Oriental Studies, European and Middle Eastern Languages and Arabic, Arabic as a subsidiary language with another Oriental Studies language or Classics, and Masters students taking options which involve Classical Arabic literature. Direct teaching time during term will be approximately 10 hours per week in the form of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Academic administration and examining will also be required. The Departmental Lecturer will also be encouraged to pursue their independent research and publish academic papers.

You will have a doctorate or equivalent qualification in Classical Arabic literature, to be achieved by the start date of the appointment, and a proven ability to give lectures and classes in the field of Arabic literature, teaching Classical Arabic texts (from ca.600 to any period up to 1800) in the original language. The successful candidate will have a sufficient depth and breadth of knowledge in Arabic literature to develop course materials and supervise undergraduate and taught graduate research topics, a publication record and familiarity with the existing literature and research in the field, and an ability and readiness to contribute to the administration of degree courses through Faculty structures.

This position is based in central Oxford. It is a full-time, fixed-term position from 1 October 2022 to 30 September 2023 (12 months, which can be reduced by mutual agreement).
