History Teaching Position at the University of Notre Dame in London

18 February 2022

The University of Notre Dame, a Catholic research university that ranks in the top 20 among American colleges and universities, operates an academic center in the heart of Westminster to promote intellectual exchange through conferences, seminars and events, as well as its academic programs for students.

The University of Notre Dame’s London Undergraduate Program seeks to employ an historian as a part-time instructor to design and teach a course that will fulfill the University's History Way of Knowing component of the core curriculum and which will take full advantage of the programme’s  location in London. Details of the expectations of a course in this area can be found here: https://corecurriculum.nd.edu/starting-fall-2018/ways-of-knowing/history/

We are particularly interested in proposals for a class that engages with issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality, or questions of social justice; those that consider sustainability topics:  or those that consider aspects of London’s built environment.

Our current offerings address Roman Britain, Britain and the Americas in the early modern period; Britain and Europe in  the 20th century, and an overview of the British Empire. We would particularly welcome proposals that would extend our regional and chronological  coverage.

The proposed class will require 150 minutes per week of in-person teaching,  over an academic semester of 14 teaching weeks.  Duties will include the design and delivery of all course materials, accompanying the class on any site visits or field trips, regular assignment and assessment of student work, including the final assessment of the class, as well as the allocation of time for office hours, either in person or on video call, outside of class meeting times.

If the course is successful it is likely further invitations to teach in future semesters will be extended.

Requirements: A Masters degree and university teaching experience in a relevant subject area are required for this position. A PhD is strongly preferred. Candidates must already have the right to work in the UK.

Application Deadline: 6 March 2022
