The Department of History in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Stellenbosch University (SU) is a department with six academic staff members, focused largely on southern Africa, with research, supervision and undergraduate teaching at its heart.

Duties:

  • -Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in history;

  • -Postgraduate supervision;

  • -Active participation in the research, publication and teaching programmes of the Department of History;

  • -Handling administrative tasks associated with these activities.

Requirements:

  • -A PhD in history;

  • -Proven track record in teaching at least one history course/module at tertiary level;

  • -Track record as a history postgraduate (co)/supervisor;

  • -Proven research record: at least two published / accepted peer-reviewed chapters / articles in history;

  • -Relevant administrative / management skills;

  • -The ability to teach and research in a multilingual, multi-cultural academic environment.

Recommendations:

  • -Experience in public outreach and community history / heritage;

  • -Economic history;

  • -Experience in the history of the Cape;

  • -The ability to communicate in English and Afrikaans / isiXhosa / other African languages.
