Lecturer in Early Modern History, University of Sheffield
The Department of History at the University of Sheffield is seeking an ambitious individual to join the department in a three-year fixed-term position to develop their research, teaching and knowledge exchange in early modern British history. The post will cover Professor Michael Braddick while he takes up a British Academy/ Wolfson Research Professorship. The Department is looking for candidates with research and teaching expertise that will enable them, in the first year, to deliver a research-led module on The Putney Debates (UG Level 2) and contribute to the teaching of the UG Level 1 module ‘The Disenchantment of Early Modern Europe’ and the UG Level 3 thematic module ‘Revolutions’. In subsequent years, the successful candidate will deliver a similar combination of early modern and core history modules. They look to support the candidate to develop their research and knowledge exchange profile.
The successful applicant will join a dynamic core team of early modern historians that includes Professor Michael Braddick (early modern England), Dr Kate Davison (social and cultural history of Britain in the long eighteenth century), Dr Tom Leng (seventeenth century commercial discourse, practice and policies), Dr Erin Maglaque (early modern cultural and social history), Professor Anthony Milton (politics and religion in early modern England, Ireland and Europe), Dr Caroline Dodds Pennock (Indigenous, especially Aztec-Mexica, Spanish American and Atlantic History), Dr James Shaw (early modern Italy) and Professor Phil Withington (social and cultural history of England, Ireland and the wider world). There are numerous thematic clusters and centres in the Department and across the University in which to participate, including the Department’s five thematic research hubs (Body and Mind, Migration and Identity, Transmission of Ideas, Slavery, and Political Engagement), the Sheffield Centre for Early Modern Studies (SCEMS), and Medical Humanities Sheffield.
The successful applicant will have teaching and research strengths within their field and be expected to contribute to the Department’s presence within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the wider University and, through outreach and knowledge exchange, in Sheffield and beyond. The willingness to communicate to a variety of audiences beyond the purely academic is also useful for this position.
