We at Birkbeck, University of London, are pleased to announce an opening for a Lecturer in Medieval Literature and Culture.

We are looking for an exceptional Lecturer (Teaching & Education) to join the School of Creative Arts, Culture & Communications this Autumn term, on a part-time (17.5 hours), fixed-term contract for 12 months. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching and administration on our BA English and MA Medieval Studies degrees and undertake scholarly activity in the field.

Applications are invited from candidates with a PhD in Medieval Literature and Culture, with teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Candidates should be able to teach Chaucer and later Medieval literature, with flexibility to teach across the subject area.

As a Lecturer, you will be;

  • -Teaching across our BA English and MA Medieval Studies degrees

  • -Employing innovations in teaching and learning, to meet the learning needs of students, through the development of teaching materials, or appropriate teaching collaborations.

  • -Undertaking and developing administrative and management roles and responsibilities within the School, (e.g. Exams Officer, Admissions Tutor) as agreed with the Head of School.

  • -Maintaining up to date expertise in relevant subject areas.

  • -Advancing knowledge in an appropriate way (which may include presentations, or publications relating to the practice of teaching and learning.)

As a Lecturer you will need to have;

  • -A specialist knowledge in your subject area.

  • -A PhD (or equivalent level) or be close to completion in the field.

  • -Good developing track record of research and expertise.

  • -Teaching experience at degree and/or postgraduate level.

  • -An understanding of different teaching and learning methods and experience of working with students from a range of backgrounds.

Remuneration:

£21,182 rising to £29,277 per annum (actual), (0.5 pro-rated £42,365 - £58,554, FTE) The salary is on the College's London Pay Scale which includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the London area.
