
Lecturer in the History of the Middle East, SOAS University of London
SOAS are looking for a one-year replacement covering the History of the Middle East for a colleague who will be on research leave during the 2022-2023 academic year. The successful candidate will be expected to participate fully in the department’ teaching and research activities during this period.
About you:
The role holder will be expected to teach mainly the following modules: H160 The Middle East in the Modern World (15 cr), H248 Rethinking Middle East History (15 cr) as well as the final-year UG special subject H343 Reform, Resistance and Revolution: the Ottoman Empire 1876-1909 (30 cr). The position also involves the supervision of UG and PGT dissertations.
The preferred candidate will hold a PhD in History or a closely related discipline, be proficient in the regional languages relevant for their research, and have gained some initial teaching and supervision experience. A strong commitment to innovative approaches to teaching and research and a collegial working style will be welcome

History within the School of History, Religions and Philosophies at SOAS is a vibrant, research-led department, ranked 10th in the UK and 39th worldwide (QS World University Rankings 2017).
Its academics and research students work across a wide spectrum of thematic issues in the histories of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. These include histories of race and capital, diasporas and migration, environment and gender, religion and thought across the early modern and modern periods, based on an intimate knowledge of the languages and cultures of the regions we study.
One of the department’s key strengths lies in innovative approaches to teaching and fostering a supportive learning and teaching environment for its students. The department offers single and combined honours degrees, an MA programme in History that can also be taken as a two-year programme with intensive language, our new MA programme Race, Empire and Decolonisation that will run from 2023, and around 30 research students.
