Applications are invited for an AHRC CDA doctoral studentship offered by the Open-Oxford-Cambridge AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership, to start in the October or January of the 2023-24 academic year. 

The studentship will be based in the Faculty of History. The successful applicant, will work on a collaborative project co-led by Professor Amy Erickson, Faculty of History and co-supervisor, Sharon Tuff, Senior Archivist at LMA. 

The studentship will investigate businesswomen in London over the long eighteenth century, to reconstruct their family situations, size of operation, training and networks. This collective biographical approach, which has been used in only a few individual case studies to date, will contribute to understanding how women created businesses and maintained them in a century when it is assumed that women only worked out of financial necessity. The project seeks to identify any distinctive characteristics of successful businesswomen and whether these changed over the period.

Funding:

The DTP studentships will provide an annual maintenance grant to cover living costs (£17,668 stipend + £550 CDA allowance pa at current rates) and university tuition fees at home fee level. The fee gap between the home and overseas fee rates will be covered by the University through internal co-funding for international candidates.
