
Professor in British History and Society at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
The Centre for British Studies is an interdisciplinary research and teaching centre (“Zentralinstitut”) at HU Berlin with faculty status. It is seeking to fill a W2 tenured professorship in British History and Society (from 1 October 2021). Successful candidates will have a degree in either history or sociology, and a proven track record and interest in the respective other discipline.
The postholder is expected to teach on the international, interdisciplinary and English-language only MA in British Studies course, to develop interdisciplinary research projects, to take a leading role in the Graduate School for British Studies and the Berlin Britain Research Network, in the Centre’s high-level knowledge transfer activities, as well as seeking third-party funding and developing the Centre’s public profile in general.
Successful candidates should either have a working knowledge of German, or be willing to learn the language, in order to fulfill their leadership and administrative functions, and need to be able to speak and write English to near-proficient level. They should furthermore have an interest in developing teaching formats for heterogeneous groups, have a proven track record of excellent teaching and research, and be willing and able to supervise doctoral students successfully. Furthermore, the successful applicant will be expected to promote the Oxford-Berlin partnership and intensify links between other research departments and faculties within the Berlin University Alliance.
