Renumeration is GBP48,624 pa. for the first six months probational period, rising to GBP50,568 pa. thereafter with biannual increases.

The German Historical Institute London is seeking to employ, from 1 Jan. 2022, one full-time Research Fellow (postdoc) with a research specialism in early modern British history/the history of the British Empire in the early modern period.

Located in the heart of a diverse and cosmopolitan city, the German Historical Institute London (GHIL) is an academically independent institution and forms part of the Max Weber Foundation – German Humanities Institutes Abroad. It focuses on researching British – German relations, British history, and colonial history, often from a comparative, transcultural, and global perspective. By co-ordinating international research projects and promoting early-career scholars, the GHIL enhances British–German co-operation in the humanities.

Duties:

We will expect the successful candidate to undertake independent academic research and to participate in the general activities of the Institute. Requirements:

We expect you to have an excellent Ph.D. in the field of early modern history, as well as very good knowledge of English and German, and a willingness to pursue a career in the German academic system. Your doctoral thesis must have been submitted before you apply, but assessment and publication may still be pending. This is a fixed-term position.

The place of employment is London. If you meet the requirements, remuneration will be based on TVöD 13 (salary scale in the German federal collective agreement for public sector employees) plus an appropriate foreign allowance, rent allowance, and family benefits to cover the higher cost of living in London. Alternatively, we offer remuneration based on the local salary scheme of the German Embassy. If necessary, the Institute will also support the successful applicant in obtaining a visa., In principle, the salary is taxable in Germany; the only exception is for British nationals who do not also have German citizenship, who are taxed in the United Kingdom.
