The University of Iowa - Tenure-track Assistant Professor, South Asian History

The History department at the University of Iowa invites applications for a position in the history of South Asia (time period open) at the rank of tenure-track Assistant Professor, to begin August 2026.

The successful candidate must have a record of excellence in research and scholarship in the history of South Asia; be prepared to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in South Asian history (including an undergraduate “Asian Civilization” survey, as well as courses tailored to their own research specialty); and be prepared to engage the programmatic missions of the department.

  • PhD in History or related field in hand by August 15, 2026.

  • Record of excellence in research and scholarship in the history of South Asia

  • Prepared to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in South Asian history, as well as courses in their own research specialization

  • Prepared to engage the programmatic missions of the department

Desirable Qualifications:

  • First-rate scholarship in the field as evidenced by dissertation, book, or other publications

  • Record of peer review as evidenced by fellowships, awards, or publications

  • Demonstrated teaching effectiveness in a broad range of courses

  • Potential to teach and advise graduate students outside South Asian history, based on thematic strengths
